Reverse Painting On Glass
The process of Reverse Painting requires the artist to begin with the finished details and work outwards to the background. Reverse Painting on Glass is a technique which was first exhibited in Germany in the 1700’s. Using clear glass the artist paints in reverse and when finished the glass is turned over to reveal the finished image. The image is then sealed
with an acrylic clear coat to preserve the original artwork. Greg also works in a variety of other mediums such as: lead & metal sculpture, clay, deep carved glass & stone, plastics and found objects.
How is it done?
The wording is actually self descriptive. Using regular, clear glass Gregory paints his images backwards! When he is finished, he flips the glass over and the picture is viewed from the front. The most difficult aspect is in the layering of details. Since Gregory prefers some realism, he is continually challenging himself to push beyond the two dimensionality of the glass to create believable 3-D images.
Artist's Statement:
"I have spent the last thirty-four years viewing the underwater realm through the glass of my mask. My glass paintings are the direct reflections of those observations. I normally only paint what I have seen or experienced first hand. Luckily my life has given me a wide range of images to draw from. Whether it was sea kayaking with Orcas off the northern tip of Vancouver Island or scuba diving the reefs of the British Virgin Islands, I have hundreds of mental images begging to be released. My biggest challenge is in conveying to the viewer the excitement and joy I have found in each experience. And, although you may not have looked a Nassau grouper in the face (yet), I hope after seeing my work you come away with a sense of what it would feel like if you did!"

Deep Carved Glass
Deep carving or sand carving is a technique by which any type of glass is engraved by forcing a stream of sand, through a nozzle using air pressure, at the item being decorated. By blasting in multiple stages, Gregory is able to create deep, complex and sophisticated designs.
The designs shown here are just a few examples of pieces Gregory has created. Please contact us for our current inventory.
Custom orders are welcome - pick the type of piece you would like, tell us what design you'd like and three weeks later your specially created piece will arrive at your door.
